Even if it seems strange to some people, there are several reasons to buy TV series DVDs instead of simply watching them when they are aired. And I am not only speaking about nostalgia for old series that are no more broadcasted. Even for some relative new series, I would rather wait for the DVD release than to follow them on TV. Here is why.

1. Better Control

The first reason is, of course, to have a better control over my life. I choose how many episodes I want to watch and when I watch them. I absolutely hate the need to be in front of my TV at a precise time every week (or worse, every day), simply because there is a TV series I like. What if someone rings? What if someone rings at the door? What if there is a broadcast issue? Really, this is too much hassle for me.

Control is also the possibility of rewinding because I want to see something again, pausing, to give me some time to think, etc… A few times, it has also happened that I wanted to see a previous episode before going forward because I wanted to check something in particular.

2. Don’t Mind the Delay

I suppose this is as issue most people have with watching TV series on DVD as we tend to thrive for the latest things. The latest series, the latest episodes of these series… Personally, I don’t mind much this delay. Sure, it kills the buzz and this is bad for me as a blogger but on a personal level, a good series stays a good series whether it was out 2 months ago or even 3 years ago. The suspense is the same from episode to episode (as long as you don’t know the end already) and well the content is the same.

3. Money-wise

I don’t find TV-series to be so expensive, especially when I think about the entertainment duration. A complete season (several hours) is generally about the same price as a movie (1-2 hours). For example, the entire first season of “The Apprentice” is available at Amazon for only $7.72! This includes the 15 episodes, plus some bonus additional content (career advice by George and Carolyn, some deleted scenes, etc…) in a nice specially designed DVD-box. A very nice deal.

4. Learning a Language

I also enjoy buying TV series to improve my language skills. I improve my English by watching American and British series (I even have one from New Zealand), I improved my Norwegian by watching some Norwegian TV shows too and sometimes, when I teach French (private lessons), I like to choose a scene from a French series and show it to my pupil.

Movies are great too but the language is more scripted, there are generally less references to pop culture, etc… The language on TV is more natural and closer, in my opinion to reality.

I am French, living in Norway and I like to watch movies and TV series from the USA, as well as from other countries. I am currently watching "The Apprentice" and some old James Bond movies.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on buying DVDs. Personally, I like owning seasons of my favorite TV shows because I’m a collector. I like to have the whole series on my shelf! I agree with you about the price. If you are patient, you can find great deals on most shows.
